Korean Skincare Routine for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide

Korean skincare is famous for its gentle, layered approach: several lightweight steps that cleanse, hydrate and protect the skin. You do not need ten steps to get started. Here is a simple routine and how to build on it.

The basic morning routine

  1. Gentle cleanser: A low-pH gel or foam cleanser removes oil without stripping the skin.
  2. Toner or essence: A hydrating toner or essence preps skin to absorb what comes next.
  3. Serum or ampoule: Target your main concern, such as dullness, dryness or blemishes.
  4. Moisturizer: Locks in hydration. Gel creams suit oily skin; richer creams suit dry skin.
  5. Sunscreen: The most important step. Korean sunscreens are known for light, non-greasy textures.

The evening routine

  1. Double cleanse: An oil or balm cleanser melts makeup and sunscreen, then a water-based cleanser finishes the job.
  2. Exfoliate (1-3 times a week): Toner pads or gentle exfoliants help smooth texture.
  3. Toner, essence and serum: Same as the morning.
  4. Sheet mask (optional): A few times a week for an extra boost of hydration.
  5. Eye cream and moisturizer: Finish with a richer night cream or sleeping mask.
